What is a bifold door?

A bifold door can go by many names. They are often called bifold patio doors, external bifold doors, folding doors or concertina doors. A bifold door is a multi-pane door that folds back to give an unobstructed clear opening. Bifold doors offer the appearance of bringing the outside in. You can close them in inclement weather. Yet they still allow the light in through the maximum glass area. However, when it is sunny and warm, you can fold them back to seamlessly open up your home to your garden. Their design offers the appearance of bringing the outside in. We supply aluminium bifold doors which have slim sightline profiles. We use the Visofold 1000 system from Smart Achitectural Aluminium to manufacture all of our bifold doors, in our state of the art aluminium factory in Lincoln.

What options are available?

Bifold doors have various opening configurations. For example, you can have a single entrance door at one end. Or on the other hand, the main opening door could be positioned in the middle. This would give you the option of a double door.

If you have an extension planned or a room that forms a corner of your property, you can open up the whole corner of your room and show off your spectacular view. This is not something you can do with cheaper systems. It is important to carefully design a solution that ensures the structural integrity of your property.

They can be made open in or out, and have aesthetically designed soft rounded edges to the sash. If, for example, a main door is incorporated into the style then this will have a lever handle inside and out. Due to the strength of the material, aluminium bifold doors allow you to span large areas. For instance, the maximum frame width is 9400mm which has 8 panes.

Many colour options are available for the bifold doors, single colours, dual colour and textured metallic finishes.

Are aluminium bifold doors energy efficient?

Bifold doors feature a polyamide thermal break that enhances the thermal performance of the profile. When fitted with our thermally efficient double-glazed units, this results in a low U-value of 1.8. Additionally. you can further enhance this by using a triple glazed unit. This will give the bifold doors a U-value of 1.4. With the high-quality weather resistance bifold doors meet the regulations of Document L (conservation of fuel and power)

Security is provided by a multipoint lock incorporating hooks and anti-lift pins on the main opening doors and a shootbolt lock on the floating mullions. Additionally,  locking can be further enhanced to PAS24/Secure by Design. This is achieved by the use of a 3-star cylinder and glazing that incorporates a pane 6.8mm laminated glass.

Also, another feature is the ability to have a low threshold that will give unimpeded access at floor level.
